We often think about Diversity & Inclusion as a color thing, and we forget about the other aspects that are important – people of different faiths, the physically challenged, our LGBT community, socio- economic status and age. These differences can be intimidating for everyone involved. That being said, we cannot minimize the criticality of race – the most difficult and divisive conversations. We have to find ways to bridge the divides so that we can take advantage of the unique sets of leadership skills and perspectives EVERYONE brings to the table. #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 16, 2017 at 12:05pm PST

Diversity & Inclusion is a conversation that needs to include everyone in an organization, not just the usual suspects that show up for conversation and trainings about diversity. And it cannot just be the superficial stuff that we think of when it comes to “diversity or cultural training” we often get at work. We also cannot have a conversation about inclusion without talking about equity or lack thereof. We need to expand the conversation outward, giving people safe environments and opportunities to connect where they can have these uncomfortable conversations. That is the only way we reach a critical mass and effect change. #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 16, 2017 at 12:21pm PST

We need to start looking at philanthropy through the Diversity & Inclusion lens. This needs to go beyond having more senior leaders of color in non-profits. Rather we need to closely examine our funding models and programs to ensure that we are not inadvertently making issues of inclusion and equity worse. Philanthropy will remain in its comfort zone until it is pushed to go further. It is not about throwing money at a problem. If we are going to create sustainable change, we must educate ourselves as to the culture and context of the constituents we serve and work WITH them to achieve THEIR goals. We have dig in and do the hard work. As community leaders we need to help connect those dots and create safe environments where stakeholders can engage; learn about one another and achieve desired outcomes TOGETHER. If we want to be more diverse and inclusive in our daily lives, then we need to be intentional and deliberate about putting ourselves and organizations in a position to achieve those goals. If new and different people are not drawn to our communities or organizations as they exist today, then we have to ask ourselves – and those feeling excluded – what can we do to be more accessible? A comfort zone for one can be an intimidating environment to another. We need to take a second look at how we are, or are not, embracing others that are coming from a completely different context. #progressisplural | 📷 by @causebeautiful A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 16, 2017 at 1:04pm PST

Diversity and inclusion is not second nature. It is something at which we have to work. We are naturally drawn to those who share our experiences whether that commonality is race, sexual orientation, socio-economics, age. When you share the same language, it is comfortable. You do not feel judged. That’s where bravery comes in. Progress, for anyone, involves growing pains – stepping up and outside your “group”. And it is only afterwards, when you look back, that you see how important that was. That’s when you see the benefits and how far you have come. #progressisplural | 📷 by @allwomanproject A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 16, 2017 at 1:42pm PST

I think most people desire to be more diverse and inclusive. We crave new experiences – heading off into unchartered territory. We’re explorers by nature. We can’t just be around people just like ourselves, it is boring. However, exploration is hard, scary and uncertain. Diversity, inclusion and equity are hard, scare and uncertain. However, we have to force ourselves to take that first step. #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 16, 2017 at 1:52pm PST
