For me, it’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech that sets the bar for diversity and inclusion – his dream that one day every child would live in a world of dignity and equality. It’s been over 50 years since he gave that speech – and how many of our leaders today are living that Kingsian philosophy? How many are willing to go into the belly of this hatred and help all of us remember the importance of that speech? What are we doing, each one of us, to make that dream come true? #JuniorLeague #diversity #inclusion #community #leadership #support #empowerment #equality #awareness #diversitymatters #genderdiversity #LGBTQ #LGBTTQQIAAP #culture #religion #openness #faith #women #neighbors #growth #fear #gender #race#vison #responsibility #accountability #progress #perspective #values #joy A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 12:08pm PST

If we want to see diversity and inclusion thrive, we must be mentors to our young people. The very essence of being young is to ask questions. “What the heck is going on?” Once they discover that what they see is not working in their best interest, they wish to change it, to lead us towards something better. But they have to obtain the skill sets of leadership first. And that’s where we come in, as their teachers. #JuniorLeague #diversity #inclusion #community #leadership #support #empowerment #equality #awareness #diversitymatters #genderdiversity #LGBTQ #LGBTTQQIAAP #culture #religion #openness #faith #women #neighbors #growth #fear #gender #race#vison #responsibility #accountability #progress #perspective #values #joy A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 12:26pm PST

Championing diversity is not just about embracing the differences in people, but rather adversity in thought. And that can be even more difficult, because a mode of thought can be very old. And it lives far below the surface. The faith community, for instance. Is it ready for diversity of thought? When it calls into question things that it has held onto very closely for centuries? How do we begin to open it up? Where a diversity in thought,in perspective, is embraced? #ProgressIsPlural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:00pm PST

Racism is at the heart of tribalism and protecting a particular resource. The point of leaders is to explain how inclusion will help our resource centric communities. If you live in West Virginia and you come from coal miners, and that has been the sole provider of your station in life, you are trusting your leaders to look out for you. Rather than telling you that coal will not be an opportunity for you, they need to start training you, slowly and surely, towards a new economic future. Saying that we need to protect coal, that that’s the only way – that’s an easy win. And it makes anything new seem like the enemy. #ProgressIsPlural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:09pm PST

I think we’re seeing the world naturally evolve into a place where diversity and inclusion is honored, and it is happening through our children. The older generations hold tight to their ways of thought, but children are looking wideeyed at the entire world, and they want to be a part of what they see – an identity that embraces many cultures. #ProgressIsPlural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:23pm PST

The civil minority has come to the fore and they are pushing the vote. The transgender woman who won in Virginia, Danica Roem. She didn’t win because of her identity. She won because she was rooted in the issues. She won because she represents human dignity, respect. Her opponent wouldn’t even acknowledge her. He refused to debate her. The fact is, when you refuse to talk to one person, you’re actually refusing to talk to a lot of people. #ProgressIsPlural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:41pm PST

The idea that we’re competing for resources – it comes from old embedded cultures that identified winners and losers based on color and religion, not skills and talent and sophistication. Our ancestors created these vehicles of oppression and now we have to work harder to set things right. #ProgressIsPlural | 📷 by @ctr4chr A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:47pm PST

People are coming to the US from all over the world. They’re not here to force a new thought into the culture, but rather add something, one ingredient, to what makes us American. They wish to be part of that hybrid... cross–pollenating. That’s what this country has always been about. #ProgressIsPlural | 📷 by @hey.luisa A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:50pm PST

We need to be vigilant mentors to the young. When the Black Lives Matter movement appeared we should have stepped in and said, yes, we know why you are angry, but let us show you how you can take that anger and make it productive. We have to insert ourselves like that, otherwise these young people can be hijacked by the vultures of darkness in the leadership space. #ProgressIsPlural | 📷 by @she_be_kale_in_it A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:54pm PST

As humans, I believe we wish to be good to one another. I think we want to see diversitythrive. Even if it’s difficult. When you have a behavior that comes from a natural place like that, it has a way of forcing itself into life. It’s like anything in nature. When the snowmelts in the mountain and the river forms, it doesn’t know how it’s going to get to the ocean, but it gets there. @derreckkayongo | 📷 by @pedromcbride A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 1:57pm PST
