Our social institutions come with a narrative that we’ve developed over the years. Black, white, gay – whatever – our history has a habit of defining us. If we want to see progress, we need to look at the future. Who do we want to become? And what’s holding us back? What do we need to fix in ourselves? We have to be transparent aboutit – what needs to change and why? The best way to do that is to welcome as many perspectives as possible. #ProgressIsPlural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 6:04am PST

With diversity and inclusion, it’s not enough to be heard. It’s about having an impact. But when you’re working against these huge “isms,” it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Which is why we need to value incremental change. Every little bit of progress matters. The Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Lib – we wouldn’t be where we are today without normal, everyday people pushing the issues forward one small act at a time. Seemingly small changes in perspective can have huge and lasting impact. #ProgressIsPlural | 📷 by @artcarlosdelgado A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 6:57am PST

Are we diverse and inclusive by nature? I don’t think so. I think we see the value of pushing outside of our comfort zones, but I also think we slide back towards what we’re comfortable with. I do it, too – surrounding myself with people that share my backgroundand perspective. It creates an echo chamber. It creates blind spots. I have to work that much harder to open myself up. I intentionally seek out people from varied cultural, socio-economic, racial, religious, gender identity/sexual orientation perspectives. That’s my personal effort to curb those natural blind spots. It’s not easy, but there’s power in that vulnerability. #ProgressIsPlural | 📷 by @sallyblakeartist A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 17, 2017 at 7:40am PST
