If we want to be more diverse and inclusive, it’s important to start by recognizing our limitations—knowing what we don’t know. Overcoming that knowledge gap requires courage to step outside our usual circles—to befriend those that don’t look like we do, don’t have the same background we do, or who have had fundamentally different life experiences from us. A basic conversation, where we listen to understand, like we have at our Junior League of Birmingham Community Roundtables, can start that process. #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 14, 2017 at 6:11am PST

The Junior League of Birmingham holds Community Roundtables to provide a safe space for discussion of difficult issues. For example, last year, we held one titled LGBTQ: Beyond the Stereotype. Through our roundtable experiences, we have seen how many layers there can be to any one issue. Championing diversity and inclusion means peeling back those layers, starting at a foundation level, with our appreciation of others, and building up from there. It’s incredible where you can go when you start from a place of kindness. #progressisplural | 📷 @archillectinsta A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 14, 2017 at 6:56am PST

The internet can be a powerful tool for bringing people together, but it can also provide a forum that exacerbates divisiveness, because it gives people a way to say things from behind a shield that they might not otherwise say in public. We have to engage each other in a respectful way. We need to keep creating safe, real-life environments where people can see what others are really about. We’re experiencing that dialogue in the Community Roundtables we are having, by hearing perspectives of the diverse groups that make up our community. #progressisplural | 📷 @ellzzrawrr A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 14, 2017 at 7:36am PST

We need to empower children to ‘teach up’. Adults can learn a lot from kids and kids have the power to influence their families in overcoming stereotypes. Kids recognize when someone is different from them, but that doesn’t mean they shut them out. If anything, they’re excited and curious to meet people that are different from themselves. We need to encourage and empower! #progressisplural | 📷 @deepspacesparkle A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 14, 2017 at 7:57am PST
