I think there’s a common bond between minorities. As someone with a disability, I know I feel a sense of kinship with others that have been marginalized. I like to think we’re all rooting for each other, as allies; that we’re all working towards a more inclusive America. - @nicnovicki Founder/Director @Easterseals #disabilityfilmchallenge #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 12:20pm PST

Inclusion starts with breaking the ice. People with disabilities often have trouble relating their perspective and life experiences to those who aren’t living with the same challenges. Even when it comes to their loved ones and friends. Our Easterseals Disability Film Challenge was a way to get that conversation started and raise awareness for people living and working with disabilities. Some families enter each year, just because it’s a project that brings them closer together. #progressisplural | 📷 by @mathenyartsaccess A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 12:37pm PST

Every group wants to see themselves represented – whether it’s in politics, in the work place, or on the big screen. We want to see equality in action. It reminds us that we’re each bringing value and richness to the big picture of life. #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 1:05pm PST

Few films depict people with disabilities, and when they do they’re often played by actors without disabilities. There just weren’t many opportunities for me as an actor. So I had to make my own. I created my own digital content and it gave me a platform to get myself out there. And that led to actual TV shows and movies. A lack of inclusion is a huge challenge that’s faced by any minority, not just those with disabilities. But it also forces you to be resourceful, to try new things, and find creative ways to achieve success. #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 1:23pm PST

I created the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge as a way for people with disabilities to tell their stories, which we seldomly see in films. It’s an especially good opportunity for actors. It’s a way for them to take their careers into their own hands, rather than wait for a part to appear. Each participant has to create a 3-5 minute film over a weekend. The entries we receive are incredible. The challenge gives actors the hands-on experience they need – telling a story visually, building a team, solving problems on the fly – and connects them with big mentors in the film/tv industry that can lead to paying gigs in the future. - @nicnovicki #progressisplural @rhyscoiro @dannywoodburn @paul_rae @jwlawson57 @bryan6744 A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 1:40pm PST

We can teach without preaching. Sometimes the most effective way to educate people around diversity and inclusion is to give them a way to SEE it in action. That’s what our film challenge aims to do – to give people with disabilities the exposure they need. It shines a light and lets people in. #progressisplural | 📷 by @shantell_martin - @nicnovicki @eastersealssocal @cbsentdiversity @ckd4cause A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 1:57pm PST

It was an honor getting to work on Boardwalk Empire with Steve Buscemi and Martin Scorsese. It is also important to create opportunities by creating my own content. - @nicnovicki #progressisplural A post shared by The Junior League (@juniorleague) on Nov 15, 2017 at 2:03pm PST
